Stellies have been losing their best players to their rivals but the tactician is hoping for a different scenario this time around.
Last season, Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker reached several milestones with his team in both the Premier Soccer League and domestic Cups.
In recent seasons, the tactician has lost some key players like Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Ashley du Preez, Zitha Kwinika and Junior Mendieta. It is also possible that they might lose Fawaaz Basadien and Deano van Rooyen in the ongoing transfer window.
In the 2023/24 season, the 56-year-old helped the Stellies win their first-ever major trophy, the Carling Knockout. Stellenbosch further finished third on the Premier Soccer League table after collecting 50 points, the same as Orlando Pirates who had a superior goal difference.
As a result, Stellies will be playing in the 2024/25 Caf Confederation Cup alongside Sekhukhune United.
More exits at Stellies? Barker responds
Chances of some players leaving are high, but the experienced coach has played them down, insisting at this time of the season, there are many baseless talks, “I have been long enough in the game and it is that time of the season where there is always talk and clubs may be interested in your players,” he told the media.

“But I think our players are happy where they are. We have shown them that we can win medals and trophies. We’ve shown competitiveness in the league, we’re playing now in the [Caf Confederation Cup].
“The players are excited to be part of that journey to help the club continue to grow, and continue to be successful.”
Stellenbosch start their season on Sunday with a tricky fixture in the MTN8 quarter-final against TS Galaxy at the Danie Craven Stadium.
