Sekhukhune United ended their three-match winless streak in the Betway Premiership with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The result keeps Babina Noko firmly in the top half of the table, while Galaxy’s inconsistent run continues.
The victory was crucial for Sekhukhune, who remain fifth in the standings but have now closed the gap to just three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. For coach Eric Tinkler, the win provides a timely boost ahead of their Nedbank Cup Round of 32 clash against second-tier side Highbury on February 7.
Sekhukhune started brightly, using their wide players to stretch Galaxy’s defence. With Bradley Grobler leading the line, Babina Noko consistently delivered crosses into the box. Their approach paid off in the 19th minute when Shaun Mogaila whipped in a precise ball that Grobler met with a powerful header, scoring his 10th goal of the season across all competitions.
Galaxy struggled to create clear chances in the opening half, with Sekhukhune’s defence holding firm. The visitors went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.
Second-Half Drama
Galaxy made two substitutions at halftime, bringing on Seluleko Mahlambi and Patrick Fischer to inject energy into their attack. The changes gave them more possession, but Sekhukhune remained disciplined and compact.
The turning point came in the 72nd minute when tempers flared. Bradley Grobler and Galaxy midfielder Sphesihle Maduna clashed off the ball, and both were shown straight red cards for violent conduct. The incident left each team with 10 men and shifted the momentum of the match.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Sekhukhune introduced new signing Lesiba Nku with 11 minutes left, hoping to add fresh legs in attack. Galaxy also pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but neither side managed to carve out clear-cut opportunities in the closing stages.
Sekhukhune’s game plan of exploiting the flanks proved decisive, with Mogaila’s delivery leading to the winning goal. Even after Grobler’s dismissal, their defensive organisation held firm. Galaxy’s substitutions improved their tempo, but they lacked the final pass to unlock Sekhukhune’s backline.
League Standings Impact
The result keeps Sekhukhune in fifth place, just behind the leading pack, and gives them momentum heading into cup competition. Galaxy, meanwhile, remain seventh, level on points with eighth-placed Polokwane City. Coach Adnan Beganovic will be eager to see his side bounce back when they host Marumo Gallants in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 on February 8.
