Broos drops big names from final Bafana squad for Uganda & South Sudan

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has finally unveiled his final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan.

South Africa will face Uganda in Kampala on November 15, and South Sudan in Cape Town four days later, and need two points from the games to seal qualification to next year’s tournament in Morocco.

Broos has therefore named a strong squad for the two matches with some notable inclusions while some big names have been dropped.

Stellenbosch FC goalkeeper Sage Stephens got his first call-up to the senior team after making the final squad while Orlando Pirates defender Nkosinathi Sibisi makes a return and so is centre-back Siyabonga Ngezana, who missed last month’s fixtures against Congo, due to injury.

Who are the big names missing?

With Lyle Foster injured, Pirates striker Evidence Makgopa has been rewarded for his fine club form with a place in the final 23 and will be fighting for a starting berth with Mamelodi Sundowns forward Iqraam Rayners.

Meanwhile, Percy Tau continues to be overlooked after being dropped from the final squad, meaning the Al Ahly forward will play no part in the qualifying phase for AFCON 2025, after missing in September and October as well.

Defenders Thabiso Sesane, Grant Kekana and Bradley Cross are the other players who have been part of the squad in previous matches but did not make the cut for the November qualifiers.
