Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams could be about to be crowned yet again after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced dates for the continental awards.
The CAF Awards will take place on December 16 in the Moroccan city of Marrakech and although the nominees are yet to be revealed, Williams is among the favourites to walk away with accolades.
Williams has been the best goalkeeper on the continent following his impressive performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where South Africa won a bronze medal while he also led Sundowns to PSL and African Football League glory.
The 32-year-old has already received a major endorsement following his nomination for the prestigious Ballon d’Or awards, where he is among the elite goalkeepers contesting for the Yashin Trophy.
Williams is among favourites for the CAF awards
Williams will be at the gala on Monday and it would be a travesty if he is not on the winner’s podium at the CAF awards, at least in his category, even if he does not succeed Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen as the African Player of the Year.
The Mamelodi Sundowns custodian was voted the best goalkeeper at AFCON 2023 for his heroics, which included saving a record four penalties in a game against Cape Verde, and two against DR Congo as Hugo Broos’ men went on to finish third, their best ever performance at the tournament in 24 years.
In the 2023-24 season, he kept 35 clean sheets in 59 games across all competitions which makes him a shoo-in for the CAF awards.
