Al-Hilal Omdurman proved they are no pushovers after denying their hosts Mamelodi Sundowns maximum points at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday night.
Miguel Cardoso’s men came into the match as favourites owing to the quality within their squad. However, it turned out to be a cagey affair as the Sudanese outfit escaped with a point in an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Group C assignment.
Both teams have a massive chance of making it out of the group, as they are so far the only unbeaten ones. The defending Premier Soccer League champions Sundowns are top of the pool with five points, the same as second-placed Blue Wave, who have been undone by their goal difference.
A good result for Al-Hilal…
Al-Hilal coach Laurentiu Reghecampf is happy that his players managed to get a point from Masandawana. He, however, feels they could have taken full advantage and maybe gotten an unlikely win.
“I think it’s a good result for us, we didn’t keep well in defence, small mistakes, that’s why we conceded the first goal, we didn’t take advantage after taking the lead, that’s why I’m happy with the 2-2 draw, because Sundowns fought back,” he said during his post-match interview with SABC Sport.

“You must understand Sundowns and Hilal are the two best teams in the group, okay, MC Alger can come back from behind with an amazing team, but it will be a nice competition with nice games, that’s why the called this the group of death,” Reghecampf concluded.
Al-Hilal will now welcome Sundowns at Amavubi Stadium in Rwanda on Friday, with each team aware of the massive task awaiting them.
