CAF Women’s Champions League: Sundowns and UWC knocked out in group stages

Published on by Afrik Foot South Africa

South African teams Mamelodi Sundowns and UWC Ladies were both eliminated in the group stages of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco.

Defending champions Sundowns had a rocky start, losing 1-0 to Masar. They bounced back impressively with a 4-0 victory over Central Bank of Ethiopia, raising hopes for a semifinal spot. However, they faltered in their final group match, losing 2-1 to group winners Edo Queens after initially leading 1-0.

UWC Ladies, making their tournament debut, also struggled initially, losing 2-0 to TP Mazembe. They recovered with a 2-0 win against Aigles de la Médina in their second match. Unfortunately, their hopes for a semifinal spot were dashed by a 2-0 defeat to tournament favorites FAR Rabat.

AS FAR and TP Mazembe will be joined by in the semi-finals of the ongoing competition in Morocco by Nigeria’s Edo Queens and Egypt’s FC Masar.
