Kaizer Chiefs choose two players as makeweight for Phili deal

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly included defender Given Msimango in a player-plus-cash offer to Stellenbosch FC as they intensify their efforts to sign highly-rated winger Langelihle Phili.

Following weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations, SABC reports that the two clubs have reached an agreement in principle. The proposed deal would see both Msimango and striker Ashley du Preez move to Stellenbosch, along with a transfer fee, in exchange for the promising young attacker.

Phili, a South Africa U20 international, is considered one of the nation’s most exciting talents and had previously attracted interest from European clubs. However, Chiefs have been persistent in their pursuit, returning with an improved offer after initial talks appeared to have stalled.

Chiefs looking for attacking reinforcements

The potential acquisition of Phili would be Chiefs’ fourth signing ahead of the 2026/27 season, as new coach Fernando Da Cruz looks to bolster his attacking options. The club has already secured the services of goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, defender Thabo Moloisane, and Tanzanian midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa.

For Msimango, the move would mark the end of his time at Naturena. The 29-year-old defender, who joined from TS Galaxy in 2023 where he was captain, has found it difficult to secure a consistent starting position at Chiefs.

Loyal servant but surplus to requirements

Despite participating in the club’s pre-season tour of Spain, Msimango now appears to be surplus to requirements. He made 53 appearances for the club in all competitions, with only 13 of those coming in the Betway Premiership last season.

While the final details of the transfer are still being ironed out, the inclusion of Msimango and Du Preez in the package signals a significant step forward in bringing Phili to Soweto.
