Premier Soccer League title-chasing Sekhukhune United have strengthened their squad with South Africa international Lebogang Phiri.
Babina Noko have been doing well in the South African top-flight football, having collected 25 points already in the 13 outings prior to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) break where Bafana Bafana were eliminated in the Round of 16 by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
A couple of days after signing Lehlohonolo Mojela from Sekhukhune United, Eric Tinkler’s men have confirmed the arrival of Lebogang Phiri. The 31-year-old, who had talks with Kaizer Chiefs in 2023, is a massive addition owing to his experience.
Babina Noko confirm a major arrival
“Sekhukhune United Football Club are delighted to announce the enlisting of former Bafana Bafana international, Lebogang Phiri’s services. The 31-year-old versatile midfielder has found a home with Babina Noko, following a 13-season European football career,” the club announced.
“His earliest stint was as a junior player at Danish Superliga side Brondby IF, where he was later promoted to the senior team and went on to make 109 appearances. From Denmark, Phiri moved on to France and Turkey – before returning to France to conclude his European journey with En Avant Guingamp.
“Phiri will be making his domestic professional league debut, when he turns out in the colours of Babina Noko – having come through the Bidvest Wits development ranks before making a direct move to Denmark early in his career.
“We welcome “General” to the Babina Noko family and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship,” they added.
Why have Sekhukhune gone for Phiri?
Club’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jonas Malatji is convinced the well-travelled midfielder will add value to Sekhukhune United in their bid to defy the odds and beat the likes of Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) crown.
“We are delighted with this acquisition, as Lebo brings both incredible talent and invaluable international experience. We look forward to his contribution as we look to finish strong this season,” he stated.
Phiri is delighted to be back home and ready to show Mzansi fans what they have been missing.
“After years of sacrifice anddedication abroad, the doors to home have reopened. Sekhukhune, thank you. It’s time to reintroduce myself,” the midfielder said.
