Langelihle Phili fulfills family’s wish with Kaizer Chiefs signing 

New Kaizer Chiefs signing Langelihle Phili has opened up about the profound personal motivation behind his move to the Soweto giants, revealing that the transfer fulfills a childhood dream inspired by his late grandmother.

The 21-year-old attacker from KwaZulu-Natal has joined Chiefs after a stellar season with Stellenbosch FC.

Phili was the club’s top scorer with nine goals and was recognised for his outstanding form by winning both the Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards, establishing himself as one of South Africa’s most exciting young talents.

However, securing Phili’s signature was a complex affair for the Glamour Boys. The Cape Winelands club initially set a hefty R16 million asking price for their star winger, presenting a significant financial obstacle for Chiefs.

Problematic deal for Kaizer Chiefs

Reports indicated that Chiefs first attempted a player-plus-cash deal involving midfielder George Matlou and forward Ashley Du Preez. While Stellies coach Gavin Hunt was reportedly keen on Du Preez’s return, the club rejected the initial offer, sending Chiefs back to the negotiating table.

With new head coach Fernando Da Cruz determined to strengthen the left wing, a breakthrough was eventually reached. Chiefs restructured the deal, sending Du Preez and defender Given Msimango to Stellenbosch as part of a swap for Phili. This revised agreement allowed Amakhosi to acquire the winger for a fee below the original R16 million valuation.

Reflecting on his journey, Phili shared his path to Naturena. “I come from Durban and started at a local club in Pinetown,” he said during his first interview with his new club.

“I then joined the AmaZulu FC youth academy, progressing to the DDC level before moving to Stellenbosch FC in 2023. After a season with their Under-23 DDC team, I was promoted to the first team. I spent two seasons there, and now I am overjoyed to be here at Chiefs.”

Phili delighted to realise his family’s wish  

For Phili, wearing the iconic Gold and Black jersey is more than just a career advancement; it’s a deeply personal milestone connected to his family’s passion for the club.

“The first thing that came to mind was my grandma, who has sadly passed away. She was a Kaizer Chiefs supporter, and I always watched them with her when I was young,” Phili explained.

“Everyone at home supports Amakhosi, so I felt it was a good move to join the team I grew up supporting. Being here feels like my dream has truly come true. I can’t wait to meet everyone and start training with the team and the coaching staff.”

As he prepares for his first season in Soweto, the young star delivered a heartfelt message to the club’s vast fanbase.

“Thank you for choosing me,” he said. “I am finally here and would love nothing more than to win trophies and make great memories with you.”
