Chiefs new signing Mokwana endorsed but with warning – ‘They need four more’

Former Kaizer Chiefs left-back Tsepo Masilela has backed the signing of Elias Mokwana but he still feels it is not enough for the Glamour Boys.

Mokwana was reported on Monday to have agreed terms with Chiefs, who he is set to join anytime as a free agent, boosting coach Fernando da Cruz’s attack.

The Bafana Bafana winger will join Chiefs two years after leaving Sekhukhune United to sign for Tunisian giants Esperance, who utilised him for one season, before sending him out on loan to Saudi club Al-Hazem in 2025-26.

Mokwana not enough for Chiefs?

Masilela feels Mokwana is a good addition to the Chiefs squad but does not solve their lack of quality forwards hence a need for further reinforcements.

“He’s got the experience, travelled, played for Bafana and we know before he left Sekhukhune what type of player he was,” Masilela said on SoccerBeat.

“Good signing, he is but the worry about Kaizer Chiefs is that after the derby at the weekend. After I watched the game and started to analyse, I think they need maybe four more of Elias’ in the wings.”

Masilela’s concern is that while Chiefs have lots of players on their books, they do not possess the kind of quality needed to compete with both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

What worries Masilela about Amakhosi

“To me, they are not really stacked with quality,” he added. “They have got depth, a lot of players in terms of numbers but my worry was when you look at Pirates and Sundowns and you look at the past game.”

“Pirates could have gone with [Mohau] Nkota and [Oswin] Appollis; those guys are still outside on the bench,” he further stated, explaining how well stacked Pirates are in attack.

Chiefs will hope that Mokwana helps them climb up the table but his signing comes at a time when Amakhosi are trailing league leaders Sundowns by 12 points and second-placed Pirates by 11.
