Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly opted against letting youngster Pheko Phago leave and offered him an opportunity to impress new coach Fernando da Cruz.
Phago has been linked with a transfer to Sekhukhune United but it appears the club is keen to see what he can add onto the team before making a decision on his future as he is part of the team currently in pre-season.
Recent reports had linked the talented young midfielder with a move to Babina Noko, causing concern among Amakhosi supporters who have seen several academy talents leave the club in recent years. However, Phago’s inclusion in first-team training suggests he may be in the club’s future plans.

The 21-year-old is part of the senior group preparing for the new season and looks like he will be part of their pre-season tour of Spain this month.
Worry of Kaizer Chiefs fans eased
It was previously reported that Sekhukhune United were keen on signing Phago, who was said to be eager for top-flight football rather than another season in the DStv Diski Challenge.
This news sparked immediate worry for the Chiefs faithful, who have watched promising players like Puso Dithejane, Khulumani Ndamane, Omega Mdaka, and Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi find success at other clubs like TS Galaxy and Stellenbosch FC after leaving Naturena.

Losing another highly-rated prospect would have been a significant blow. Phago, nicknamed “Spanish Guitar,” has built a strong reputation within the club’s development system. The Krugersdorp native was named Kaizer Chiefs’ U19 Player of the Season in 2022 and was instrumental in the club’s first DDC title win in 2025. His exceptional form included a run of four Man of the Match awards in just six games.
What makes ‘Spanish Guitar’ special?
Phago is a left-footed defensive midfielder whose primary strengths are his composure, mature decision-making, and ability to control the tempo of a game. He is known for his press resistance and an impressive passing range.

His quick, one-touch play and on-field maturity have made him a standout player. Furthermore, he offers a greater attacking threat than many traditional holding midfielders, adding another dimension to his game.
Like any young player, Phago still has room to grow. He could improve by driving forward more aggressively with the ball when opponents give him space, and by making late runs into the box to get on the end of cutbacks or attempt long-range shots. Developing these aspects could add more goals to his repertoire.
For now, his presence with the first team ahead of the pre-season tour is a strong signal that Chiefs are closely monitoring one of their most promising midfield talents and Da Cruz will have to assess him before a final decision is made.
