Chiefs star in but Pirates, Sundowns dominate Mosimane’s Bafana squad

Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has named his preliminary Bafana Bafana squad for the forthcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON ) qualifiers.

The celebrated tactician has not made major changes to the team that his predecessor, Hugo Broos, was working with. As expected, Mamelodi Sundowns and the Orlando Pirates have dominated the team.

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebogang Maboe has been included in the team, alongside the likes of Cemran Dansin. In attack, Yanela Mbuthuma has his chance but will have to prove that he is better than the likes of Iqraam Rayners, Lyle Foster, among others.

Goalkeepers: Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chaine, Ricardo Goss.

Defenders: Aubrey Modiba, Samukele Kabini, Fawaaz Basadien, Kamogelo Sebelebele, Thapelo Morena, Thabang Matuludi, Olwethu Makhanya, Khulumani Ndamane

Midfielders: Teboho Mokoena, Lebogang Maboe, Cemran Dansin, Sphephelo Sithole, Bathusi Aubaas, Brooklyn Poggenpoel.

Forwards: Iqraam Rayners, Yanela Mbuthuma, Lyle Foster, Cassius Mailula, Oswin Appollis, Puso Dithejane, Tashreeq Matthews, Relebohile Mofokeng, Themba Zwane, Ronaldo van Neel, Thapelo Maseko, Tshepang Moremi, Luther Singh, Shandre Campbell.

What Mosimane said regarding Bafana squad

“I’m not carrying the biggest broom to sweep here. We have a very good foundation from the team that went to the World Cup,” Mosimane stated.

“We currently have four or five major injuries to key players who won’t be available. Naturally, we need to replace them, but it’s crucial to understand that time is not on our side.”

South Africa will play Guinea on September 23 at home, before facing Eritrea away four days later.
