Langelihle Phili: Concern raised about Kaizer Chiefs new signing

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Rodney Ramagalela has endorsed Kaizer Chiefs’ recent acquisition of young attacker Langelihle Phili, calling him a strong addition to the squad.

Phili joins a host of new faces at Naturena, including Thabo Moloisane, Renaldo Leaner, Adolf Mtasingwa, and Khanyisa Mayo, who have all signed permanent deals. Faiz Abrahams is also expected to be part of the new-look team under incoming coach Fernando Da Cruz.

While praising Phili’s abilities, Ramagalela raised questions about how the promising forward will integrate into a team already rich with talent in similar positions.

“I don’t think they made a mistake by signing Phili because he is one of the top young players in the country,” Ramagalela stated on the Arena Sports Show. “My question is, how is he going to fit into the team? You still have Luke Baartman, Asanele Velebayi, and Pule Mmodi in the same position.”

Ramagalela emphasised the importance of the new players adapting to the club’s winning mentality. His comments followed Chiefs’ season opener against Kruger United, where he noted a significant improvement in their style of play.

Message to Chiefs new signings

“It is going to be important for them to ensure they understand the Chiefs playing style of winning matches,” he added. “I watched their opening match… and I saw a different Chiefs. They moved the ball quicker, and I was impressed with Baartman on the left side of the field.”

With the new season underway, attention now turns to the MTN8, which kicks off this Saturday. The tournament will serve as an early test for Da Cruz’s revamped squad and provide a platform for new signings like Phili to make their mark.

Ramagalela believes that while Phili’s arrival is a positive move, the coaching staff faces the challenge of managing squad competition and ensuring the new recruits quickly grasp the high expectations at Kaizer Chiefs.
