Former Premier Soccer League outfit Cape Town Spurs have threatened to sue if Asanele Velebayi, Liam Bern, and Luke Baartman complete their moves from the club.
The Urban Warriors were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, which is an amateur league. As a result, the players' contracts, according to the NSL rules, became invalid, meaning they could have joined any team of their choice.
Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly sealed the services of Baartman and Velebayi, while AmaZulu have managed to go for the signature of Bern. Spurs are, however, not letting the players leave, since they believe the deal between the parties is still valid.
According to the club's CEO Alexi Efstathiou, the trio has breached the contract, and action will be taken if they don't report back for pre-season.
Spurs demand players to report to training

“Cape Town Spurs have threatened to throw the book at three players linked with moves to Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu if they do not report back to training at Ikamva in the coming days,” SABC Sport confirmed.
“All three are believed to have concluded deals with Betway Premiership teams as both Velebayi and Baartman are strongly linked with moves to Chiefs pending formal announcements, while Bern is at AmaZulu,” the state broadcaster continued.
Spurs have now wrote to the players demanding their return, “The employment contract concluded between Spurs and yourself remains valid and binding, and you will accordingly remain employed by Spurs until your employment contract comes to an end or a mutual agreement is reached between Spurs and yourself to terminate your employment contract at an earlier date.”
It is interesting to see how the situation will unfold in the next couple of days as teams start preparations for the 2025/26 season.
