DDC wrap: Orlando Pirates beaten as Stellenbosch maintain league lead

Published on by

Orlando Pirates saw their two-game winning run in the DStv Diski Challenge come to an end following a 3-2 loss to SuperSport United at the Isak Steyl Stadium on Saturday.

The young Buccaneers came into the contest high on confidence, having gone three games without losing, including back-to-back wins, but had their bubble burst after 11 minutes when SuperSport broke the deadlock through Sphesihle “Sjove” Jeza.

That is how the scores stayed at the break and any hopes of Pirates levelling matters went up in smoke just a minute after the interval, when Keenan Bezuidenhout made it 2-0 for Matsatsantsa.

Pirates had to wait until past the hour mark for Siphamandla Msezane to pull one back with a shot from outside the box and they were celebrating a second one minutes later when Mbekezeli Mbokazi levelled matters with a powerful shot.

Who were the other winners of the day?

However, SuperSport had the last laugh when Bezuidenhout sealed his brace five minutes from time, to hand his side their third win of the season.

Following the loss, Pirates are fourth on the log on 15 points, but that could change on Sunday if Cape Town City, on 13 points, beat Chippa United.

Meanwhile, Richards Bay recorded the biggest win of the day when they thrashed Polokwane City 5-1, while Golden Arrows secured a 3-0 victory over Magesi FC, as defending champions Stellenbosch edged out Marumo Gallants 1-0 to maintain their top spot on the table.
