Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has been handed a coaching role by the Uganda national team.

Onyango, who won 82 caps for the Uganda Cranes, and even captained the side, announced his international retirement in April 2021, but has now returned in a coaching capacity, albeit on a short-term deal.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper has joined the Uganda national team preparing for the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) where he will serve as one of the goalkeeper trainers for a short period during his time off from Sundowns.

FUFA taps into Dennis Onyango’s experience

“Former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and captain Denis Onyango has graciously offered to support the CHAN squad's goalkeeping department during his holiday in the country, after being approached by FUFA. He will join the team at Luzira today for a 10am training session, providing support for the duration of his stay,” Uganda Football Federation announced on Monday.

Onyango graciously accepted the role, offering to support the local goalkeepers who will represent Uganda at the tournament, set to be staged in the country as well as neighbouring Kenya and Tanzania in August.

What has Sundowns keeper said over his new role?

“This morning at Prison grounds, Luzira, l joined in giving technical support to the Uganda Cranes goalkeeping department as the team prepares for the upcoming #TotalEnergiesCHAN2024 next month,” Onyango posted on social media on Monday after joining the team’s training.

Learning football and sharing the acquired knowledge has always been my passion. Now is the time since I’m on holiday in the country.

The veteran goalkeeper is taking some time off after a tough season with Sundowns which saw him win his ninth league title with the Brazilians and a 12th overall with his contract extended by a further year.

Uganda will begin their CHAN 2024 campaign against 2022 beaten finalists Algeria on August 4 in Kampala.
