Did Williams absence play role in Sundowns three losses this season? Mngqithi weighs in

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has responded to whether the three defeats they suffered were a result of Ronwen Williams' absence.

Williams was unable to take part in Sundowns' pre-season and the a few matches in the early stages of the season due to a shoulder injury.

The team suffered defeats in both legs of the MTN8 semi-final against Stellenbosch FC, with Jody February serving as the goalkeeper.

Additionally, during Williams' trip to France for the Ballon d'Or, the team faced a loss to Polokwane City, with Denis Onyango in goal.

Nevertheless, Mngqithi acknowledged that Williams contributes significantly to the team's performance when available, while also affirming that February and Onyango performed admirably during their time on the field.

MNGQITHI REFUSES TO LOOK DOWN ON ONYANGO AND FEBRUARY

“It's a tough one because we know his quality, but I also think Denis [Onyango] had a very good game against Polokwane City before he got a red card, and Jody [February] had some sterling saves against Stellenbosch,” said Mngqithi.

“But Ronwen is Ronwen, and probably not just from a playing side, I think he's also a very good leader within the group, and we appreciate it when he does things the way he does, but I wouldn't want to nullify the contribution of the other keepers because I think they played very well.

“We made a lot of mistakes from the in-field players, there's no game where you can say, ‘This goal was scored because the goalkeeper was not of the best quality,' but it was merely poor defensive actions and we got punished.”
