Diski Challenge: Advantage Pirates as Sundowns lose while Chiefs’ woes continue

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs’ difficult DStv Diski Challenge season took another turn for the worse as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against AmaZulu on Sunday afternoon.

The decisive moment came in the 38th minute when Rocco Rocha found the back of the net from close range, securing the victory for Usuthu. The Soweto giants failed to mount a comeback, ultimately succumbing to their fifth loss of the campaign.

With the win, AmaZulu achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first team this season to defeat Chiefs both home and away while Amakhosi are now 17 points behind leaders Orlando Pirates.

Sundowns suffer title race setback

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns’ championship aspirations were dealt a significant blow following a 3-2 loss to Golden Arrows in a thrilling Sunday morning encounter.

Sundowns took an early lead through Bennett Mokoena, but their advantage was short-lived. Arrows equalised in the 23rd minute, capitalising on an error from goalkeeper Nqobani Biyela. Andiswa Booysen and Kwandile Gumede then scored to give Arrows a commanding 3-1 lead before Gomolemo Kekana pulled one back for Sundowns.

The defeat marks a missed opportunity for Sundowns to gain ground on league leaders Orlando Pirates. They remain five points adrift of the top spot, with the Soweto giants not in action this weekend.

Siwelele keep title hopes alive

Elsewhere, Siwelele FC maintained their challenge for the league title with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Polokwane City on Saturday.

The impressive result sees the Bloemfontein-based club climb to third on the league table. They are now eight points behind Pirates, who also have a game in hand.
