Don’t blame Nabi! Chiefs management urged to ‘sign players that fit club’s profile’ – ‘Struggles not coach’s fault alone’

Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have struggled to find their footing in the South African football scene for a decade.

It got worse in the 2023/24 season when they finished 10th in the Premier Soccer League table and missed out on the MTN8. Molefi Ntseki, Arthur Zwane, and Cavin Johnson are the coaches who have been shown the door recently after failing to help the Glamour Boys get to the top.

Experienced Tunisian tactician Nasreddine Nabi is the latest coach hired at the beginning of the ongoing campaign to help rebuild Amakhosi. However, Chiefs have been blowing hot and cold across all competitions. Despite making the Nedbank Cup quarter-final, the Soweto giants have not been convincing.

They missed out on the Carling Knockout after falling in the last eight, and are currently placed eighth on the PSL table with 29 points even after signing some quality players.

Where is the problem?

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Katlego Mphela, who was commonly referred to as Killer owing to his effectiveness in the final third, believes the problem is not the coaches. He has now challenged the management to find a real course to the problems facing the team.

“I would like to think that the problem was not with the previous coaches because coaches cannot take all the blame,” he told SNL24.

“The whole institution needs to look at themselves and try to find a solution. They brought on a new technical team and players but they are still experiencing the same problems. So, it's clear it's not the coach's fault alone

“[Chiefs] recruit new players that fit Chiefs' profile, and also reinstall the winning mentality and give the coach time to start winning. If they can work on all these factors I think they will go back to winning ways and I believe management knows that by now,” Mphela concluded.
