Orlando Pirates tightened their grip on the DStv Diski Challenge title race after opening up a five-point lead at the top of the table with a 2-0 victory over Richards Bay on Saturday.
The Buccaneers came into the clash determined to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat to Kaizer Chiefs and delivered a professional performance. Seth Green broke the deadlock seconds before halftime, giving Pirates a crucial advantage heading into the break.
Richards Bay tried to respond in the second half, but Pirates doubled their lead late on to seal all three points and keep their rivals at arm’s length. The result piles pressure on chasing sides Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, and Siwelele FC, who now face an uphill battle to close the gap.
Elsewhere, Kaizer Chiefs produced their biggest win of the season, hammering Chippa United 5-1 to climb to third place on the log. After going into halftime level at 1-1, thanks to Asanele Bonani equalising for the Chili Boys, Amakhosi turned on the style in the second half.
A brace from Manqoba Ozoemena, plus goals from Thulani Mabaso, Kamogelo Malefa, and Naledi Hlongwane, completed the rout and extended Chiefs’ winning run to three matches. Despite the emphatic victory, they remain eight points behind leaders Pirates.
In the third match of the day, Golden Arrows stunned TS Galaxy in a dramatic encounter that saw the Rockets reduced to ten men. Galaxy, who had been tipped as strong contenders, were undone by a red card and Arrows’ clinical finishing, leaving their title hopes dented.
Saturday’s Results
- Orlando Pirates 2-0 Richards Bay
- Chippa United 1-5 Kaizer Chiefs
- Golden Arrows beat TS Galaxy (scoreline pending confirmation)
