Durban City host AS Port-Louis 2000 at Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday in a fixture that matters far more than its Second Preliminary Round billing suggests.
Eric Tinkler’s side are playing continental football for the first time in the club’s history, having earned the spot by winning last season’s Nedbank Cup. Victory over the two legs would send the Citizens into the CAF Confederation Cup group stage at the first attempt.
Their opponents arrive with a story of their own. ASPL 2000 are back in CAF competition after a nine-year self-imposed exile, having qualified by winning Mauritius’s domestic cup.
Two continental newcomers in their own way, then, both needing to beat an unfamiliar name to keep a landmark season alive.

Form and Build-Up: Citizens Unsettled at Home, Steady in Africa
Domestically, Durban City’s last five outings read two wins, one draw and two losses, including a 1-2 defeat away to AmaZulu on October 13 and a 0-2 loss at Orlando Pirates the week before that.
It is a shaky run to carry into continental business, though it has come alongside genuine upheaval behind the scenes, with Tinkler only recently installed as head coach.

Where City have been reliable is in Africa. They swept past Burundi’s Rukinzo FC 3-1 on aggregate in the First Preliminary Round without conceding more than once in a single leg. ASPL 2000’s build-up looks very different on paper: after edging Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana 2-1 on aggregate on September 12, they have no confirmed fixture since, meaning they arrive more than a month without a competitive match.
That could cut either way, as fresh legs but also as rust against a side that has kept playing.
Road to the Second Round
Road to the Second Round
Neither side has been spectacular to get here, but both have been composed under pressure. City needed a 70th-minute own goal to break down Rukinzo in the first leg before doing the heavier lifting away from home.
ASPL, for their part, spent long stretches of both Jwaneng Galaxy legs defending deep and absorbing pressure, relying on goalkeeper Kenny Hanley Alcide for a string of saves in the second leg before a stoppage-era winner settled it.
Head-to-Head Record
There is no history between these two clubs to draw on. This is the first time Durban City and ASPL 2000 have been paired in any competition, continental or otherwise, so Sunday’s first leg is also the first chapter.
Durban City vs ASPL 2000: Team News and Predicted Lineups
City have a near-full-strength squad to choose from. The one selection story is a welcome one: Gastón Sirino served a one-match domestic suspension for his fourth yellow card of the season against AmaZulu, but that ban does not carry into continental competition, so the Uruguayan-South African is free to return against ASPL. Kyle Jurgens and Samkelo Maseko, City’s scorers against Rukinzo, both remain available.

ASPL 2000’s situation is harder to read. Coverage of the club is thin enough that no fresh injury or suspension news has surfaced since their September win over Jwaneng Galaxy, so their likely XI below leans on that same match rather than any more recent confirmation.

Star Player Comparison: Jurgens vs Leclerc
Kyle Jurgens heads in as the man both scored and set the tone for Durban City in the Rukinzo tie, opening the scoring inside the first minute of the second leg from a John Mokone cross.
ASPL’s man of the moment is substitute Kewell Leclerc, whose 73rd-minute strike away at Jwaneng Galaxy proved the difference across both legs. Comparable season data for ASPL’s squad is scarce, so the table below is kept to what can actually be confirmed for both players.

The Dugout: Tinkler’s Return, Titi’s Test
Eric Tinkler is not new to this club, even if his appointment is recent. The former Bafana Bafana midfielder, capped 45 times for South Africa, previously managed this side under its old Maritzburg United name between 2019 and 2020.
His coaching résumé since has taken in Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United and two spells at Cape Town City, and it carries genuine continental pedigree: he led Pirates to a CAF Champions League final and SuperSport United to a CAF Confederation Cup final in 2017.

His most recent post, at Ghana’s Asante Kotoko, ended after a few months when he asked to be released from his contract for personal reasons, before he returned to South Africa and took the Durban City job.
Across the technical area, ASPL 2000 have turned to Rasoanaivo “Titi”, brought in specifically to lead this continental campaign. He follows a family footprint at the club: his older brother, Fidy Rasoanaivo, managed ASPL 2000 between 2011 and 2012. Titi has kept his pre-match messaging guarded, saying only that the squad’s full focus is on preparing for Durban City before looking any further ahead.
Tactical Preview
Expect Durban City in a 4-2-3-1, with Jurgens and Brooklyn Poggenpoel screening the back four and the licence to attack handed to Samkelo Maseko and Luphumlo Sifumba either side of Sirino, if he returns centrally as expected.
Jean Lwamba as the central striker gives City a runner to play off, with John Mokone’s overlaps from left-back already a source of a goal this competition.
ASPL 2000, on the evidence of both legs against Jwaneng Galaxy, are likely to sit in a deep, compact block rather than press high, trusting their goalkeeper and back line to absorb pressure before looking to hit City on the counter or through a set piece, much as Leclerc’s winner arrived off the bench rather than from sustained build-up play.
