Mamelodi Sundowns open the defence of their CAF Champions League title away from home, in the Angolan city of Lubango, against a Girabola side many South African fans have never heard of.
Wiliete SC have not lost a single match in the Angolan top flight this season and sit top of the table with 16 points from six games.
The two clubs have never met before, and Wiliete’s Brazilian coach Beto Bianchi has made no secret of the size of the task: “If we want to get into the group stage, we have to eliminate Sundowns,” he told the club’s media.
Miguel Cardoso’s Downs arrive full of confidence after a 4-1 win over Richards Bay and an MTN8 Cup triumph over Orlando Pirates, but the Portuguese coach has warned his players not to take the Angolan leaders lightly.

Girabola Pace-Setters Against PSL Pace: Form and Context
Downs have won four of their last five matches in all competitions, their only blemish a 1-1 draw at Chippa United.
That run includes the MTN8 final win over Orlando Pirates and a comfortable 4-1 away victory at Richards Bay, with Tashreeq Matthews and a Iqraam Rayners brace either side of a Fawaaz Basadien strike.
Cardoso has already signalled he will rotate his squad for this trip, pointing to Fawaaz Basadien’s recent form as proof of his options’ depth.
Domestically, Downs sat top of the Betway Premiership in late September, though that table has since moved on and should not be read as a current snapshot.

Wiliete have scored 13 goals and conceded just one across their last five matches in all competitions, a run that includes both legs of a 5-0 aggregate win over Seychelles side Foresters FC in the previous qualifying round.
Mabululu was the chief destroyer of Foresters FC in that previous round, confirming his status as Wiliete’s most dangerous attacking weapon heading into this tie.
The Angolan club finished runners-up in last season’s Girabola for a second straight year and won the Taça de Angola for the first time, beating Kabuscorp 2-1 in the final, context for a rise that now has them chasing a maiden CAF group-stage place.
Tickets for the open terraces at the Tundavala stadium have already sold out, with locals paying the equivalent of around US$4 for admission.
This is leg one of a two-legged tie, with Downs hosting the return fixture at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on October 23.
Wiliete vs Mamelodi Sundowns: A First-Ever Meeting
Wiliete SC and Mamelodi Sundowns have never met in any competition before this tie, making Sunday’s match a genuine blank slate for both sides.
That lack of history cuts both ways. Downs cannot lean on past continental pedigree against this specific opponent, and Wiliete have no psychological scar tissue to overcome either.
Wiliete vs Mamelodi Sundowns Team News and Predicted Line-ups
Neither side has reported a confirmed injury or suspension ahead of kickoff, though Cardoso’s rotation plans leave some uncertainty over his final eleven.
Wiliete’s squad news is harder to pin down from outside Angola, though Bianchi is expected to lean on his in-form front line of Mabululu, Gilberto and Gibelé.

Star Player Comparison: Mabululu vs Iqraam Rayners
Wiliete’s talisman is 33-year-old Angola international Mabululu, who scored three goals in two legs to eliminate Foresters FC in the previous round.
Downs can counter with Iqraam Rayners, who struck twice in the 4-1 win over Richards Bay and sits joint-top of Sundowns’ domestic scoring charts alongside Tashreeq Matthews and Brayan León on three goals apiece this season.

The Managers: Beto Bianchi vs Miguel Cardoso
Beto Bianchi, the Brazilian in charge at Wiliete, was appointed this season with one explicit target: get the club into the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time.
He has pointed to Sundowns’ recent record of struggling to protect leads in continental second legs played away from home as a tactical opening his side can exploit.

Miguel Cardoso, the Portuguese coach who led Downs to last season’s CAF Champions League title with victory over AS FAR, has called this draw unfavourable and is urging his players not to underestimate Wiliete.
“They will create problems,” Cardoso has said of the Angolan leaders, adding that his coaching staff were already studying Wiliete’s play before the tie was even confirmed.
Tactical Preview
Bianchi’s belief that Sundowns are vulnerable when defending a first-leg lead away from home suggests Wiliete will look to press and attack from kickoff rather than sit back.
Mabululu, Gilberto and Gibelé give Wiliete a genuine front three capable of stretching a Sundowns defence that has already conceded three goals across its last five matches.
Cardoso’s rotation plans could blunt some of that threat, but Downs’ squad depth, visible in match-winners coming off the bench throughout their nine-match unbeaten run, should allow them to field a credible side even with changes.
Petro de Luanda goalkeeper Hugo Marques, no stranger to facing Wiliete domestically, admitted earlier this month that conditions in Angola could make this a difficult night for the South Africans.
Expect Sundowns to control possession for long periods while Wiliete look to hit them on the counter in front of a sold-out home crowd.

🔮 Score Prediction
Wiliete SC 1 – 2 Mamelodi Sundowns
Wiliete’s attacking trio should trouble a rotated Sundowns side, but Downs’ squad depth and continental pedigree look enough to take a slender first-leg lead back to Pretoria. Likely scorers: Mabululu (Wiliete), Rayners (Sundowns).
