Emotional ex-Bafana keeper praises Chaine – ‘I was crying! He has gotten Pirates 15 points’

Former South Africa goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has lauded Orlando Pirates custodian Sipho Chaine for his heroics this season, arguing he has won his team at least 15 points.

The Sea Robbers have been doing well across all the competitions, and are still in the Premier Soccer League's title race despite a 4-1 loss against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend.

Relebohile Mofokeng, Thalente Mbatha, Patrick Maswanganyi and Makhehleni Makhaula have been lauded for the impact the Buccaneers have had. However, the former Bafana Bafana international Josephs had explained why Chaine should also be given his flowers for the club's decent run.

“That is the type of a goalkeeper that wins you leagues! Chaine so far has gotten us probably 15 points this season with the vital saves that he makes, that save at the death [against Sekhukhune United], my goodness,” he told SoccerBeat.

“I was already crying [thinking Pirates will draw]… to anticipate a save like that is the most difficult thing because the guy is right in front of you. Chaine has the ability to stand straight up and [react] just when the player is about to shoot.

“Great goalkeepers they don't always anticipate, they react, that was a reaction save, to read that ball is unbelievable.”

In the ongoing campaign, Chaine has already kept seven clean sheets in the Premier Soccer League which is already more than what he managed in the 2023/24 edition.

The main focus for Pirates, this weekend, will be in the Nedbank Cup where they will play Baroka at the Orlando Stadium in the Round of 16.
