Emotional Kaizer Jr. reflects on winning first trophy as Chiefs Sporting Director

Kaizer Chiefs have finally lifted major silverware, securing the Nedbank Cup title to end a drought that stretched back to their 2014/15 league win.

This victory represents a “unique ‘once in a lifetime'” moment for Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jnr, who paid tribute to his father, Chairman Kaizer Motaung Snr, the technical team, and the squad.

Appointed in July 2021, Motaung Jnr took charge during a six-season period without a trophy, implementing a new vision despite facing various disappointments over the subsequent four years.

The crucial breakthrough came under coach Nasreddine Nabi, whom Motaung Jnr brought in from ASFAR. Despite a poor league campaign, Nabi delivered the cup, prompting an outpouring of emotion from the ‘SD', players, technical staff, and all connected with Amakhosi.

‘WE ARE BLESSED TO HAVE THIS CHAIRMAN’

“I want to give thank you to Nedbank, they have been an amazing sponsor over the years, I think everyone can see how they always captured the imagination and dreams of people, so today has been a dream for us, we’re humbled and blessed to celebrate with the people we have in the stadium,” Motaung Jnr. said to SuperSport TV.

“We blessed to have these fans and the Chairman we have, the board of directors, I just feel very blessed and honoured. I can’t put it into words, today was one of the most special days of my life.

“I know the birth of my children will be the most specials days, but this one it was a very unique, once in a lifetime moment and I am very privileged to be here with the players, technical staff and everyone involved in the club.”

He continued, “It’s very [special], we had a plan when I first began, we knew we wanted a bit of a younger squad, we knew we’d take a bit of a hit to get that, and to give young players minutes in a big team, we took several hits,” he explained.

“We’re still in a process. Our youth team managed a league trophy after nine years, so there’s a plan, a process but also at the same time, we’re very fortunate to have the Chairman we do have, with the vision he has for the club, lightyears ahead of everyone and still right now, we tap into his wisdom with everything we do.”
