Chiefs urged to change their signing approach: ‘You need players to deal with heavy shirt’

Kaizer Chiefs technical team and scouts have been urged to go for players who have the mental strength to deal with millions of supporters and deliver consistently.

For the pat 11 years, Amakhosi have been hiring and firing coaches, and bringing in players they think can help them get success instantly. However, they have a single major trophy, the 2024/25 Nedbank Cup under the then coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Before the ongoing campaign started, the Glamour Boys parted ways with co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, replacing the duo with Fernando Da Cruz.

As usual, some players were also let go, with Thabo Moloisane(Stellenbosch), Renaldo Leaner, Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko (Azam FC), Langelihle Phili (Stellenbosch FC), and Faiz Abrahams (Stellenbosch, Loan) joining.

Former Chiefs tactician Muhsin Ertugral has now suggested what Amakhosi should do to improve and remain competitive.

“Chiefs continue to reshape the squad since years, and that has its challenges as well for me. So there is still a rebuilding process taking place. You can’t say it differently,” he told the Darkie Magazine.

“Kaizer Chiefs’ recruitment has to be far more than finding good individual players. An enormous level of expectation has piled up, and it’s understandable. But now you need players who can deal with such a heavy shirt.

“There is a difference between playing very well for another PSL club and performing when 20 or 30 million supporters are emotionally connected to every result.

“Recruitment, coaching and, most importantly for the future, player development have to start speaking the same language. If Chiefs establish consistency over the next transfer windows rather than constantly restarting, then you begin building something very successful,” he concluded.
