Ex-goalkeeper on Chiefs’ Khune: ‘He needs to know the truth’

A former goalkeeper has had his say on the situation of Itumeleng Khune who wasn’t given a contract by Kaizer Chiefs despite expressing his interest to continue playing.

The contract of the 37-year-old shot-stopper ended at the end of the previous season just after he was honoured for having served the club for 25 years.

In 2023, Amakhosi announced that the 2023/24 season would mark the final chapter of the former Bafana Bafana captain's playing career in the iconic Gold and Black.

Reports indicate that Khune is set to move to the marketing department, where he will assume a new position

Former AmaZulu goalkeeper Pelewe Delamogo says that Khune may find it challenging to come to terms with the reality that he does not have what it takes to continue playing.

He feels that the Ventersdorp-born, Khune would spoil the good things he has done during his peak if he were to continue playing.

FORMER AMAZULU GOALKEEPER SAYS KHUNE MUST BE TOLD THE HARSH TRUTH

“I know that this will be difficult for him to accept, but I think it is time that he accepts that he must retire,” said Delamogo.

“He has done great things through his career and ranks amongst the best, if not the best, to ever play in South Africa.

“Khune changed the face of goalkeeping with his distribution, but there comes a time when you must pass on the baton to the next generation.

“How much football has he played in recent years?

“I don't think he has played enough to deserve a contract anywhere else.

“Khune must not spoil all the good that he did all these years by wanting to keep on playing when no one is interested in him anymore.

“If he was still in demand, another club would have taken him by now, but reality is that he is past his best years.

“Chiefs have moved on from Khune and Khune needs to be told the truth about it.

“There always comes a time in life when you have move on instead of holding on until the system starts pushing you out like it is doing now.

“Khune has done enough to remain a favourite for a long time to come and he needs to understand the need to keep that value and honour.”
