Ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach identifies biggest problem with Amakhosi – ‘There are a few players who…’

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Sergio Dos Santos has offered his diagnosis for the club’s ongoing struggles in front of goal, suggesting a lack of teamwork is to blame for their inability to convert chances.

Despite creating numerous opportunities in their games, the Soweto giants have found it difficult to find the back of the net consistently. Since the start of the year, Chiefs have managed just five goals in five matches, a period in which they have recorded four wins and one loss.

Dos Santos believes the issue stems from players prioritising individual glory over collective success.

“The problem with Chiefs is they miss chances, and you can’t miss chances like that,” Dos Santos explained to KickOff. “It’s been the story of Kaizer Chiefs this season. A player will break through and get an opportunity to square the ball to a free-running teammate to score, but what does he do? He tries to score from an impossible angle.”

Heroism among Chiefs players slammed

He pointed to Wednesday’s Nedbank Cup loss to Stellenbosch as a prime example of this costly inefficiency.

“Kaizer Chiefs had many chances against Stellenbosch on Wednesday and they didn’t use them. Stellenbosch used their chances,” he noted. “Chiefs were unlucky, but you have to give a lot of credit to Stellenbosch. Congratulations to them because they played percentage football and got away with it.”

The former coach concluded that a shift in mentality is needed, criticising what he sees as a desire for personal heroism within the squad.

“There are a few players in this Kaizer Chiefs team who want to be heroes,” he stated. “They don’t want to be the person who made an assist for somebody else.”
