Ex-Orlando Pirates player scores a brace in Chippa win over Durban City

Published on by

Chippa United boosted their Betway Premiership survival hopes with a vital 2–0 victory over Durban City at Buffalo City Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Sinoxolo Kwayiba was the hero of the day, scoring both goals as the Chilli Boys picked up back-to-back league wins — and just their third of the campaign. His brace, capitalising on two costly defensive errors from the visitors, lifted Chippa out of the relegation playoff position and into 14th place, two points clear of danger.

Durban City, meanwhile, saw their momentum halted. They missed out on a potential third straight league win and suffered their sixth defeat of the season. The KwaZulu-Natal side remained sixth on the log, seven points off leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, having already played two more matches.

How the Match Unfolded

Chippa started the game on the front foot, fashioning early half-chances for Sirgio Kammies and Justice Figuareido, though neither could convert.

Their persistence paid off in the 33rd minute when Kwayiba stole the ball off a hesitant Darren Keet inside the box and calmly slotted into an empty net to hand the hosts a deserved lead.

The midfielder almost doubled his tally seven minutes later, breaking through on the right side of the penalty area, but Keet redeemed himself with a sharp near-post save. The Durban goalkeeper continued making amends in the 41st minute with a superb one-handed stop to deny Figuareido what looked a certain goal.

After halftime, Durban City pushed for an equaliser, but another defensive lapse proved costly. Just past the hour mark, defender Terrence Mashego attempted to head the ball back to Keet but instead played it directly into the path of Kwayiba, who finished clinically for his second of the afternoon.

City thought they had pulled one back late in the match when substitute Ronaldo Maarman converted from close range, but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside.

What’s Next?

The two sides will meet again next Friday, 6 February, in a Nedbank Cup Last 32 clash at Chatsworth Stadium.
