Former Kaizer Chiefs forward backs Orlando Pirates for PSL title glory

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Lehlohonolo “Major” Majoro has given reasons why he thinks this could be the season that Orlando Pirates finally wins their highly-awaited league title.

Pirates have not tasted title glory since 2012 with Mamelodi Sundowns winning 11 of the last 14 titles, Kaizer Chiefs, twice, and the now defunct Bidvest Wits the only other teams to win the league over that period.

However, this season, Pirates, who have finished second in the last three seasons, have upped the ante and lead the table with 38 points from 17 matches, three more than Sundowns in second while Chiefs are eight behind with two games in hand.

With the Soweto Derby coming up on Saturday, Pirates can pull further ahead from Chiefs with a win and Majoro thinks Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team have enough to go all the way and end Sundowns’ dominance after the Brazilians won the last eight titles in a row.

“I must say we’ve seen a lot of youngsters raising their hands. It’s an opportunity for them to cement their position within the club,” Majoro told Soccer Laduma.

“We’ve seen at this time most of the time Mamelodi (Sundowns) has been the favourites in the three years of league games. But this time is different in a sense. Chiefs will be closing the gap, having games in hand.

“It’s an opportunity for Orlando Pirates to win the league. It’s been long. They’ve worked hard so far to be where they are, and they could see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he added.

Pirates will, however, need to improve remarkably to win the league as they have been shaken in the last one week when they lost 2-1 to Sundowns in the league before exiting the Nedbank Cup after a post-match penalty loss to Casric Stars.

“After coming from those big losses here against Sundowns and also over the weekend against Casric Stars, so this is an opportunity to get the momentum going, winning against Chiefs,” added Majoro.
