Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has rubbished the negative vibe on the Social Media after elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

South Africa came into the 2025 edition hoping to go all the way and win the biennial competition for the first time since 1996, when they lifted the trophy on the home soil.

In 2023, they managed to finish third despite coming into the competition, held in Ivory Coast, as the underdogs.

Mzansi finished second in Group B that was also made up of Egypt, who finished at the helm, as well as COSAFA duo Angola and Zimbabwe. However, in the Round of 16, they fell to the five-time champions Cameroon who were also knocked out by Morocco in the quarter final.

Broos welcomes lesson learnt and slams his critics

Coach Broos has welcomed the lessons learnt in Morocco and promised to work on them.

“It was a good experience, certainly, even though it was a bad experience, maybe. It’s the way you want to look at it. But I always say the team for a country like South Africa has to be in every AFCON,” he told the media.

“And for a moment, we succeeded in doing that. Okay, this was less good than the other one, but we were there; that’s the most important thing, and we are also at the World Cup. Let’s hope that in the coming years, I will see South Africa in the next AFCON and in the next World Cup because those are levels where you learn a lot.”

The Belgian was however, angry over unconstractive critisicm emanating from the Social Media, “I don’t read social media because what is on social media is all trash. I know I have the experience of 40 years that whenever everything is good, all those guys shut up, but if there’s a defeat, they have big mouths,” he added.

“So, they have a big mouth now, and I can manage that. Whatever they say, whatever they think, I have to do, players I have to call – have had four years here, not listening to that. And I will not listen in the last six months either,” the 73-year-old concluded.
