Gaston Sirino to replace Themba Zwane? Bafana Bafana coach responds

Gaston Sirino is unlikely to ever realise his dream of playing for South Africa as long as Hugo Broos is still in charge of Bafana Bafana.

Sirino has been termed as a potential star for Bafana Bafana given his impressive stint at Mamelodi Sundowns and now at Kaizer Chiefs, where he has scored two goals and provided four assists, in seven games.

The Uruguayan-born attacker recently acquired a South African passport, which makes him eligible to feature for Bafana Bafana given he is yet to player for the South American nation at senior level, and with playmaker Themba Zwane injured, there has been a push for him to be added into the squad.

Broos never considered Kaizer Chiefs playmaker

However, after unveiling his final 23-man team for November’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan on Thursday, Broos ended the debate, saying he has never considered Sirino for selection as he does not fit the profile of what he is looking for.

“No, I have to be honest,” Broos said on SABC1 when asked whether he ever considered Sirino for selection.

“I know that Sirino is a very good player. I know also that he can be very important for Chiefs but he’s not really the type of player I want.

Is Gaston Sirino too old for Bafana Bafana?

“Secondly, he’s also 34, I think. I was looking for months to have somebody else for Themba because he was old that time. So, I don’t go to take another older player.

“No, I want to find younger players than Sirino, even though he is a good player. But he doesn’t really match my ideas of football.”

That effectively ends Sirino’s dream of donning the South African jersey at least until Broos leaves the Bafana Bafana hotseat.
