George Matlou provides update over his Kaizer Chiefs future

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou is at crossroads as his contract comes to an end next month.

Matlou has displayed huge potential since arriving at Chiefs ahead of the 2022-23 season but he has been very unfortunate with injuries.

The midfielder, a workhorse blessed with great dribbling abilities, has not been able to fully display his talents in a Chiefs shirt as injuries have limited his appearances, and he returned in January after another long spell out that saw him not play for nine months.

With his contract coming to an end and his injury record, it is not certain that Matlou will be given a stay of execution by Chiefs even though the player would love to stay and it has left him counting on prayers.

Midfielder desires to stay at Chiefs

“Yes, my contract is coming to an end this coming June. But I am going to leave that to God, as I said, because I am one person who grew up in church. So, I will give everything to God,” Matlou told KickOff.

“Of course, most definitely to the technical team, to everyone, to the board and staff, to give me an opportunity if they do. It's football, but I'm not going to plan for the future now.”

The former Moroka Swallows midfielder says he does not want to be distracted by his contract situation and will only speak to his agent when the season concludes.

“My focus now is to win Saturday's game to get into the Top Eight,” he added, looking forward to Chiefs’ final game of the season against Polokwane City.

How is Matlou handling his situation?

“As a player, I'm only focusing on the game, so the last game we are going to play is on Saturday. So, what will happen next [with regards to my contract] is for the club and the agent, so I will hear from the agent.

“I'm one player who does not talk to the agent while the season is on. So, I'm focused on the team that I am playing for currently. If I'm going to start thinking about contracts and stuff, I'm going to lose concentration for the game.”

Matlou’s initial contract had ended last season before Chiefs extended it for a further year but with his injury record, he could be offloaded as Amakhosi looks to create room for new arrivals.

The 26-year-old has made 15 appearances in all competitions since his return in January, providing a couple of assists.
