Glody Lilepo: Kaizer Chiefs make transfer decision on wantaway forward

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs have made a definitive decision regarding the future of winger Glody Makabi Lilepo, with his departure from the club now all but certain.

Despite meeting performance expectations since his arrival, Lilepo’s time at Naturena has been marked by persistent off-field speculation, particularly since the end of last season.

His representatives have been actively pushing for a move during the current transfer window, driven by concerns over the club’s ambition.

According to KickOff, those close to the player feel Chiefs have not shown sufficient intent in the transfer market to build a squad capable of winning the league or qualifying for the CAF Champions League.

Chiefs forward not part of Spain camp

Adding to the situation is Lilepo’s contract status. The Congolese international is entering the final year of the deal he signed in January 2025, when he joined from French third-tier side Valenciennes under former coach Nasreddine Nabi. His initial terms were improved after his first six months, placing him among the club’s higher earners.

Eighteen months on, having contributed 15 goals and five assists, Lilepo appears to be packing his bags. The 28-year-old was notably absent from the squad that travelled to Spain for pre-season, a clear signal that he is not part of new coach Fernando da Cruz’s plans for the upcoming campaign.

For now, Lilepo continues to report to the Chiefs Village, training with other players who are also not in the first-team picture. Meanwhile, the club has been inundated with enquiries and concrete offers from clubs in Morocco and Tunisia.

Interest from North Africa in Lilepo

Among the interested parties are Moroccan Champions League participants MAS Fez and RS Berkane, as well as CAF Confederation Cup contenders Raja Casablanca and AS FAR. Wydad Casablanca has also been linked, despite not competing in continental football this season.

From Libya, Al Ahly Benghazi have shown interest, while Tunisian giants Esperance have also entered the race for his signature.

Amakhosi have reportedly received at least three offers that meet their valuation, which prompted the decision to exclude Lilepo from their European pre-season tour. It is also reported that the player’s residential estate has been informed of his imminent departure, and news has also reached his home country, the DR Congo.

While negotiations with North African clubs can present challenges, Chiefs are now simply waiting for their terms to be fully met before officially sanctioning the transfer.
