Orlando Pirates flog Gilberto has admitted that he struggled to adapt to life in the PSL, leading to his poor output that has now forced him out of the club.

Gilberto joined Pirates with much promise for a reported R10 million from Angolan giants Petro de Luanda in the off-season and was seen as the man to add firepower to the Bucs attack given they were set to challenge both at home and in the CAF Champions League.

However, six months into the deal and he is back home to rejoin Petro on a six-month loan after failing to impress coach Jose Riveiro as Pirates look to have decided to cut their losses.

The winger has admitted it was a tough time playing in South Africa and is looking to kickstart his career in Luanda.

Why did Gilberto flop in SA?

“It was very difficult for me to adapt and adjust to the team. I wanted to play more to show my level. I promise to work hard here at Petro so that we can win titles together,” he said.

Gilberto was set to compete for a place on the wing for Pirates but has been outshone by youngsters Mohau Nkota and Relebohile Mofokeng, who have proved to be match winners on numerous occasions for Rivairo’s team.

It is not known if the loan deal includes an option for Petro to sign the winger permanently as it would be a massive loss for Pirates after shelling out R10 million on the 23-year-old.

Gilberto was used sparingly by Riveiro, featuring in 14 games, but only made two starts, failing to score a goal across all competitions.
