Give me Chiefs! Stellies’ Barker explains why he wants Amakhosi in CAF CC group

Stellenbosch made it to the CAF Confederation Cup's group stage with a deserved win over the Equatorial Guinea outfit 15 de Agosto de Akonibe at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

The first leg between the sides had ended goalless before the Premier Soccer League outfit claimed a 4-1 win at home to advance.

Last season, they managed to reach the semi-final before falling to the Tanzanian outfit Simba SC.

Barker elated to make it out of the preliminary round

“It was a solid performance from us, and I think, all around, it was clear to see that we were the better team and in control of the majority of the match. We had been unlucky not to get an earlier goal with the chances we created, and we hit the post a couple of times, so going in with only a 1-0 lead at halftime, I thought we probably needed to have gotten another goal,” he said as quoted by the club's media.

“We started the second half well and got the 3-0 lead, and then it was pretty comfortable. Obviously, you don’t want to be conceding sloppy goals, and clean sheets are always something that we want to be keeping, so it was a bit disappointing to concede at 3-1, but we got the fourth, and the game was over.

It was a solid performance all round. It’s nice to be scoring goals again and just looking forward to the group stages,” Barker added.

Bring Chiefs on!

In the group stage, Stellenbosch might find themselves in the same pool with Kaizer Chiefs who went past AS Simba of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the previous hurdle.

Barker has explained why he will not mind getting paired with the Glamour Boys.

“Difficult one. In terms of traveling and knowing the opposition? Yes, I wouldn’t mind having [Chiefs] in our group, because that would mean one less travel,” he told the media.

“So, in terms of that, I wouldn’t mind having them in the group to answer you directly,” he concluded
