Hlatshwayo convinced SuperSport United can dim Orlando Pirates’ MTN8 dream

The veteran center-back is happy with the Swanky Boys’ preparations ahead of the newly anticipated campaign.

SuperSport United, just like the previous campaigns, have lost some key players ahead of the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League season.

League champions Mamelodi Sundowns signed key defender Kegan Johannes while teenager Shandre Campbell was snapped by Club Brugge of Belgium. The two played a massive role for the Swanky Boys last season.

Coach Gavin Hunt responded by signing some interesting players; apart from the on-loan duo Nyiko Mobbie and Ricardo Goss, they have brought Pogiso Sanoka, Vincent Pule, Brooklyn Poggenpoel, Thakasani Mbanjwa and Keanin Ayer.

MTN8 quarter-final, a chance to prove their qualities

On Saturday, Hunt is expected to field some of those players against Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 fixture to be staged at Orlando Stadium.

Captain Thulani Hlatshwayo, who is commonly referred to as ‘Tyson' is convinced his team will make a strong case.

“The MTN8 is a good cup to start strong; as soon as you win the MTN8, it sets the tone for the rest of the season,” the 34-year-old former Pirates defender stated.

“We know what they are capable of and I’ve won this cup with them before but we also know where we can hurt them.

“I am honoured that SuperSport gave me another season. It shows the appreciation for the work that I’ve done not only on the field but off the field,” Hlatshwayo concluded.

Challenging the Premier Soccer League title might be tough for the Swanky Boys, but surely, they will be hoping to make the first three positions by the end of the new campaign.

However, they can still push for the Nedbank Cup and Carling Knockout as well as the MTN8.
