‘I drink’ – Chippa & former Pirates player opens up on lifestyle

Former Orlando Pirates defender Justice Chabalala has opened up about his lifestyle, admitting he drinks but still ensures he delivers at Chippa United.

It is rare for athletes to share their lifestyle, especially regarding alcohol, because they might be negatively judged.

However, the 32-year-old says he is responsible for his actions, and that he has never reported to work under the influence of alcohol.

I am not scared to say that I drink – Chabalala

“Maintaining my presence in the professional ranks is about respect which I didn't learn from anyone,” the defender told the media during the Carling Knockout draw.

“Naturally, I am like this, so I start with respect first… Respect is about doing good things and supporting whether you are playing or not playing. Whenever things are bad, keep on pushing, training, [and] coming early. You drink, you know what time to drink.

“You know when it is not the time to drink, you step aside. I am not scared to say that I drink, I am a senior player. I drink but I know the time to drink; I have been playing football for so long, and I never came to work drunk.

“It is important for me that [the younger players] must learn how to drink so that they can survive in football.”

Chabalala opened up about personal life and why he works hard

The defender has further revealed a lot of responsibilities that motivate him to give his best and live responsibly.

“I remember I used to go to school [barefoot] and I was okay even though others had school shoes,” Chabalala continued.

“Through football, I have been able to help my mother, and my father build a house and everything they need is sorted. We are five at home and I am the only one working.  My father and mother are old now, my brother gets piece jobs and I also have to look after my sister and younger brother.

“I also have my wife and kids, so I think that maybe that is why I survive because I support my family and am happy to put food on the table and make them know that I am there for them.  I also give them advice about the fact that tomorrow I might not be here so they need to push.”

This season, Chabalala has already made three Premier Soccer League appearances for the Chilli Boys.
