Inacio Miguel: Chiefs defender facing heavy sanctions after Soweto derby red card

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel is staring at an extended spell out following his sending off in the Soweto derby.

Miguel received his marching orders in stoppage time of Saturday’s match after a second bookable offence as Chiefs lost 2-1 to bitter rivals Orlando Pirates.

The Angolan defender is set to miss two games, which will be the Carling Knockout quarter-final clash against Siwelele FC on Friday, and the league match away to Chippa United after the international break.

Why Miguel risks further punishment

However, the defender risks further punishment as before his sending off, he was already on three yellow cards, meaning another booking will see him suspended again.

Miguel had been booked against Mamelodi Sundowns, Siwelele FC and Stellenbosch FC before the derby which raises concerns over the discipline of the 30-year-old, who is one of the senior players at the club and should be leading by example.

His latest suspension will take it to six matches, the total number of games he would have missed on disciplinary grounds since signing for Chiefs in July 2024, which is a distraction to the coaching staff as he denies them options in defence.

Will ill-discipline mess Chiefs contract talks?

Chiefs are grateful that Rushwin Dortley has returned but coach Fernando da Cruz would have loved to have his full complement around, and according to KickOff, Miguel could face further punishment from the club over his latest suspension.

Miguel’s disciplinary record could also jeopardise a contract extension as talks are underway between his representatives and the club over a new deal when his current one expires in June 2027.

The centre-back has played 68 games since signing for Chiefs, scoring four goals, and was making his 10th appearance this term before his red card in the derby.
