Jimmy Tau slams referee Tom after controversial Mokoena decision

Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Jimmy Tau has raised concerns over the officiating in Mamelodi Sundowns’ 1-1 draw against Siwelele FC at Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium on Wednesday, where midfielder Teboho Mokoena was controversially sent off.

The result denied Sundowns the chance to reclaim top spot in the Betway Premiership, leaving them second on the table with 26 points from 13 matches, one game more than leaders Orlando Pirates, who sit two points clear.

Mokoena’s dismissal which coach Cardoso also slammed, came after two contentious yellow cards and forced the Tshwane giants to finish the match with ten men.

Reviewing the clash on SuperSport TV, Tau maintained that the 28-year-old was unfairly punished, insisting Mokoena’s tackle on Siviwe Magidigidi was legitimate and the booking from referee Abongile Tom was a terrible decision.

“It’s unfortunate we don’t really know what was exchanged. I agree Teboho pushed him, but players push each other all the time during games,” Tau said, referring to the first yellow card following a scuffle with Tebogo Potsane.

On the second caution, Tau was even more critical: “That cannot be a red card. No, it can’t be. He won the ball. And another thing I want to check, if the referee makes such a bad decision, are we able to rescind it?”
