Kaizer Chiefs flew to the top of the Premier Soccer League table following their convincing 3-1 victory over newbies Kruger United on Saturday night at the Mbombela Stadium.

Amakhosi did not include wantaway winger Glody Lilepo, as well as midfielder Thabo Cele, who is not part of the technical team’s plans this season. Luke Baartman and Mfundo Vilakazi were given a chance to prove they can be relied on.

Silva on target, but…

Chiefs were bright in the opening exchanges, desperate to get an early goal to cool the nerves of the away fans, the players and everyone associated with the team.

Flavio Da Silva did not keep them waiting for long as he delivered just seven minutes into the game, tapping in Mfundo Vilakazi’s pass in the danger zone.

In the stroke of halftime, the hosts managed to get the ball into the Amakhosi danger zone after Siphesihle Ndlovu had committed a foul in the middle of the pitch.

Khetukuthula Ndlovu managed to tee himself up before bending the ball past hapless Amakhosi captain Brandon Petersen to ensure the first half ended even.

Duba steals the show

The Glamour Boys were not in the mood for dropping points in their first game of the season. Their effort paid dividends in the 57th minute; Reeve Frosler’s shot was parried by goalkeeper but on the path of Wandile Duba, who had replaced Silva.

Duba took his chance well to make it 2-1 in favour of the Soweto giants.

The 22-year-old completed his brace in the 63rd minute, connecting Lebohang Maboe’s pass with a little help from the defender’s deflection.

There were a couple of chances for either team in the final 30 minutes, but no more goals were witnessed.

Amakhosi will now shift their focus to the MTN8 quarter-final fixture on Sunday, August 9, against Golden Arrows.
