Kaizer Chiefs defender explains why PSL is now a ‘dream’ league for African players

Kaizer Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel says the South African league is way ahead of the rest and is now a place where players can achieve their dreams of playing professional football.

Miguel is in his second season at Chiefs after joining from Petro de Luanda from his native Angola and he has seen the massive difference between the PSL and the Angolan Girabola.

The 30-year-old admits the South African top flight cannot be compared to the Angolan league which is still way behind in terms of quality, organisation and resources as well as the technical ability of players and coaches.

“I am not minimizing the Angolan league but there is a massive difference in terms of knowing the game and starting from the coaches and development,” Miguel told SoccerBeat.

Miguel on what makes PSL tick

“South Africa is a dream for Africans who want to be professional players. Playing in South Africa is a big step to go overseas.

“For example, we have recently seen players starting to go overseas again so I think the biggest difference is the organization of the game. The reading of the game also.”

Miguel had a mixed bag in his first season in South African football as he made some tactical and positional mistakes that led to goals but he remained a mainstay at the heart of the Chiefs defence under former coach Nasreddine Nabi.

He has, however, massively improved this season with Chiefs keeping the highest number of clean sheets in the PSL (nine), while they have conceded the second fewest goals, having let in six, only bettered by Orlando Pirates’ five.
