Kaizer Chiefs throw lead to share spoils with Mamelodi Sundowns

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns played to a 1-1 draw in the Premier Soccer League game staged at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Glamour Boys came into the match desperate to end the Masandawana hoodoo. In the last five years, the Soweto giants had not beaten the Brazilians in the league; they had lost seven games, and managed three draws.

The visitors struggled to beat TS Galaxy 3-2 in their previous league fixture, but beating Amakhosi has not been a problem for them.

The goalless first half

Masandawana came into the match without their influential midfielder Teboho Mokoena who had been ruled out.

Both teams struggled to settle in early exchanges, with every team employing a cautious approach to avoid conceding.

The only shot on target came in the stroke of half-time from Kaizer Chiefs’ new signing Langelihle Phili, but Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams was there to stop Amakhosi from getting the ball into the net.

Spoils shared!

Even after the pause, creativity in the final third was wanting, but while the visitors struggled to get into the Amakhosi danger zone, the latter pushed for a goal when opportunity came.

In the 63rd minute, the Glamour Boys deservedly found the back of the net. Siphesihle Ndlovu made a good run before teeing up Phili. The former Stellenbosch attacker did well to guide the ball home.

However, Masandawana struck back in the 75th minute through Cassius Mailula, who headed past Brandon Petersen to make it 1-1. The custodian had come to make a clearance but mistimed his run, giving the versatile attacker a chance to get his name on the score sheet.

The result means Kaizer Chiefs are now on seven points from three games, while Mamelodi Sundowns have four, but from two games.
