Petersen blunders again as Kaizer Chiefs share spoils with Polokwane

Brandon Petersen’s blunder saw Kaizer Chiefs and Polokwane City draw 1-1 on Saturday in the Premier Soccer League fixture staged at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The Soweto giants had initially collected three wins and two draws from the first five league games they had played. With Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League duties, three points for Fernando Da Cruz-led men were enough to take them behind Mamelodi Sundowns.

Maboe delivers for Amakhosi

Rise and Shine were determined to put Amakhosi under pressure from the first whistle, with Tidimalo Molokwane and Tshepang Matube coming close only to be denied by Brandon Petersen, who has been under pressure recently for making costly mistakes.

In the 29th minute, Pule Mmodi managed to get into a promising position. He spotted Lebohang Maboe advancing, which prompted him to deliver a precise cross that the latter controlled well before beating the goalkeeper.

Amakhosi went into the break leading, but Polokwane blamed themselves for failing to take their chances.

Kaizer Chiefs were lucky not to concede an equaliser in the 55th minute as Molokwane beat the defenders, only for the referee to wrongfully raise an offside flag.

Eventually, Rise and Shine got their goal in the 73rd minute when Giovanni Philander’s corner somehow ended up in the back of the net courtesy of Amakhosi skipper Petersen.

It was a bad ending for Petersen, who has been making mistakes this season after an impressive 2025/26 edition.

The result saw the Glamour Boys drop to fourth on the table with 12 points, one less than AmaZulu. Sundowns and Pirates remain first and second, respectively.
