Kaizer Chiefs given transfer warning – ‘Too many signings will delay progress’

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Frank Makua has cautioned the club against signing too many new players as they prepare for a rebuilding phase under a new technical team.

Makua believes that with every player being new to incoming coach Fernando Da Cruz, a large influx of signings could create confusion and hinder progress.

“There are still players like Khanyisa Mayo, Mfundo Vilakazi and Luke Baartman who were not given enough game-time by the previous coaches. Maybe this new coach will know how to use them properly,” Makua told KickOff.

“But how are you going to know that if you rush to release them or loan them out? Bringing in too many new players will delay the progress of players like Vilakazi and Baartman,” he explained.

The former Witbank Spurs player, affectionately known as ‘Disco’ during his career, emphasised that a new coach offers a clean slate for every member of the current squad to prove their worth.

“Letting go of players who didn’t feature enough last season would not make sense,” Makua stated, adding that Chiefs should allow Da Cruz to form his own assessments of the talent at his disposal.

“We must not reinforce with more than five players; there is no need for that. We just need to add here and there,” he advised. “You might rush to release players, only to find they were a perfect match for the new coach’s system and philosophy.”

Makua concluded that releasing a large portion of the current squad would force the club to start completely from scratch next season.

To date, Amakhosi have reportedly secured the permanent signing of Khanyisa Mayo, goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner and defender Thabo Moloisane, with more signings anticipated before the new season kicks off in August.
