‘Kaizer Chiefs have done well!’ Cedric Kaze adamant Amakhosi are rebuilding & realistic objectives should be considered

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze believes some supporters are frustrated because they expected too much from the team.

Last season, the Glamour Boys ended a decade-long trophyless run by securing the Nedbank Cup. By virtue of winning the tournament, the Soweto giants grabbed a ticket for the CAF Confederation Cup, alongside Stellenbosch, who had finished third on the Premier Soccer League table.

Following the signings made, the club’s faithful expected their team to do even better this season across all competitions, and maybe deliver another silverware to the supporters.

However, it has not been the case as Amakhosi are out of all Cup competitions, and way behind Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns in the race for the Premier Soccer League crown.

Judge Kaizer Chiefs after the season concludes

“If I was judged on where the team used to be, maybe I would have got a medal now because we won a trophy last season, after ten years and you know sometimes you need to be realistic,” the Burundian told the media.

“We’re a big club that is in rebuilding, we’re a big club that is in rebuilding and that’s the facts we need to understand, because if you don’t understand that, you will make a lot of mistakes, thinking you have to have the right, to have that.

“All these years you don’t have that [success], then how do you get to that? It’s the question, when you raise the expectations too much, the reality becomes unrealistic. But as I said, let’s finish the season and judge us on what we have achieved,” he added.

Kaizer Chiefs have done well

Amakhosi have finished 10th and ninth respectively in the last two Premier Soccer League editions. Despite collecting 30 points from 18 games so far, Kaze concedes it could have been better.

“For me [the progress] is enough but not enough, as we could have had more points than what we have – there are those games against AmaZulu, TS Galaxy, and Chippa United where we had over 60% possession, 20 shots on target, missed penalties, disallowed goals,” he explained.

“With those, maybe we could have had more points, but at this point, we feel we could have done better; but we have done well,” Kaze concluded.
