Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo makes interesting picks in his greatest SA players

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has picked the players who he feels are the all-time greats from South Africa.

Khumalo, widely regarded as one of the finest to play the game in Mzansi, was put to task on Marawa Sports Worldwide to name his three top players from the country but he went for five and did not include himself.

The 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winner named Chiefs legends Patrick “Ace” Ntsoelengoe and Lucas Radebe, Orlando Pirates great Jomo Sono, ex-Mamelodi Sundowns star Phil Masinga, and former Amakhosi midfielder John “Shoes” Moshoeu is his South Africa’s all-time best.

Does Khumalo consider himself a South African great?

“Doctor Khumalo is missing…where does he fit in?” presenter Robert Marawa asked the ex-Chiefs star. “I guess someone will have to tell me,” Khumao responded.

“Would you regard yourself as one the greatest of all-time in SA football?” Marawas further asked.

“The unfortunate part is that I don’t recall what I have done on the field,” Khumalo surprisingly said.

Marawa responded: “It was that mesmerising.” But Khumalo said: “I am one kind of a person who does not blow your own horn but I made it a point that if I faced an opponent on the other side of the field, he is dead.”

Chiefs legend gets emotional over Hall of Fame award

Khumalo was recently inducted into the South African Hall of Fame and he was emotional when talking about what the award meant to him.

“This award I am dedicating it to my parents for the vision, guidance, support they have shown to me and my sister Fikile,” Khumalo said, fighting back tears.

Khumalo played for Chiefs for nearly all of his career from 1987 to 2004 before brief stints in Mexico and the United States in the final years of his football journey.

He made 50 appearances for Bafana Bafana, scoring nine goals, and formed part of the squad that won the 1998 AFCON as South Africa hosted the continental tournament.
