Solomons names what is holding back Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs defender Dillan Solomons is not impressed by how they have been defending and wants them to seal the loopholes quickly.

Chiefs have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last three games, taking the lead against Mamelodi Sundowns and then conceding to draw 1-1, before a 2-2 stalemate with Richards Bay.

Last weekend, they nearly threw away the game when Siwelele FC scored twice before Amakhosi won 3-2 to get back to winning ways and Solomons insists they must be better.

“I think getting the result was positive for us but, obviously the way the game went, we weren’t really happy with it,” Solomons told the club’s media as quoted by Soccer Laduma.

“Obviously we take the results, we take the three points because that’s the most important, but obviously the way we present ourselves, we want to be better than what we showed in that game. Obviously trying to be more defensively sound, be more good defensively and limit our mistakes at the back.

“So, that’s probably one of the things that we need to control. But going forward, I think we did really well. Looking at the circumstances that we had, having three not-so-tall boys in front, but obviously keeping the ball and making the defenders run.

“So, that was a tactic and it played off really well. And, yeah, look for us as a team, just to get the results is important but also how we present ourselves and how we come and show what type of football we want to play. We need to improve on a lot of things but that comes with time,” he added.

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy played all 90 minutes as his Azerbaijani club Sabah FK lost 4-0 away to Manchester United.

The Chiefs academy graduate showcased his skills on the biggest stage in European club football, making a number of vital interventions, but it was not enough as United cruised to a 3-0 lead in the first half, thanks to goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko before Lisandro Martinez added the fourth later in the second half.

One of McCarthy’s key moments was when he made a crucial tackle to deny Brayan Mbeumo but he was beaten by Fernandes for the second goal while he failed to clear the ball in the box before Martinez slammed home the fourth after a goalmouth melee.
