Chiefs walking on tightrope ahead of Soweto derby

Kaizer Chiefs have four games before the October 31 Soweto derby. Suspensions, double bookings, and a growing injury list already have AmaKhosi on edge.

Chiefs have three league fixtures and one cup match to play before they face Orlando Pirates on October 31. Those games are Polokwane City on Saturday, then Golden Arrows on September 20, Stellenbosch FC (October 17), and then the Carling Knockout first round (October 24/27).

What will be hard to ignore is that the fifth match on the local calendar after these four is against Bucs, the biggest match on the calendar.

Suspensions and injuries will be under the microscope leading up to this fixture, which has already had two players making bookings for family to travel that weekend.

The double cautions list already has Inacio Miguel and Siphesihle Ndlovu, putting them at two yellows away from suspension.

Those already on a card each include Pule Mmodi, Luke Baartman, Langelihle Phili, Thabo Moloisane, and Brandon Petersen.

The injuries front, headlined by Rushwin Dortley, is where it will be interesting.

Dortley will hope to be back in action by then, just like Paseka Mako, Nkanyiso Shinga, Reeve Frosler, Thabiso Monyane, Flavio Silva, and Phili, who have all had injury issues in recent weeks.

For the last derby played in April, Chiefs escaped all suspension risks that had been looming ahead of the fixture.

Amakhosi have had four players sitting on three yellow cards for over a month, but all avoided adding a fourth suspension, which would have then led to suspension.

Flavio Silva, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Mfundo Vilakazi, and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo made up that quartet. 

‘Arrogant’ Duba praised

Former winger Junior Khanye has applauded the arrogance Kaizer Chiefs striker Wandile Duba has been displaying in recent matches.

Khanye was making reference to how the 22-year-old has been positioning himself in the 18-yard area as well as his mobility in the danger zone.

He has already notched up three strikes in four Betway Premiership matches this campaign, aiding Amakhosi to sit third on the Betway Premiership standings. Khanye described Duba as the best striker Chiefs currently have because he has the arrogance in him and knows how to move around when they’re in attack.

“Chiefs were supposed to score so many goals in the first half [against Siwelele]. They were supposed to score more than four goals,” he said as quoted by iDiski Times.

“Duba, I think that boy is better than the strikers Chiefs currently have. What I love about him is that he has arrogance. And that arrogance you need on the pitch. It’s perfect if a player has arrogance and he uses it on the pitch.

“The fact that he scored with a back heel; also, his character when he plays- he has that thing that I don’t want to lose. His positioning is perfect; he has mobility. He can trap and pass. He’s coming from the development; better than other strikers that Chiefs has,” he concluded.
