Chiefs now calling for VAR implementation

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has called for the implementation of VAR following what he felt were unjust decisions against his side.

The absence of the technology in the local game has been a big subject of conversation for at least the last two seasons and has gained momentum in the last term.

Department of Sport, Arts and Culture announced last season that it had given money to the South African Football Association to implement VAR and even threatened to want their money back as SAFA is yet to implement the technology.

Some coaches have been vocal about the effects of the absence of the technology which is being used in a lot of leagues across the world, including in some leagues in Africa.

Da Cruz brought this up after his side’s 1-1 league draw with Polokwane City at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, where he felt Chiefs deserved a penalty for a foul on Pule Mmodi late in the second half.

The coach also referenced other matches where he felt his side was disadvantaged by match officials, adding that VAR is also for the benefit of the referees as well.

“He says also, just to finish, also to develop the PSL to help our referees, we need to set up the VAR,” he told the media.

“He says because against Richards Bay, one offside, there was no offside and then we could score goals. Against Siwelele, the goal of [Wandile] Duba was a goal and today there was a penalty. So, he says if we want to continue to develop the championship, we need to set up the VAR to help our referees.

“Sometimes it can be against us, but for three games it can be with us.

“He says he doesn’t want to offend or to attack the referee but it’s important to set up the VAR to support and to help the referee on the field.”

Why new signing has struggled for game time

Mtasingwa, 27, joined Amakhosi at the start of the current campaign; however, he has struggled for game time, featuring in only three matches across all competitions, and twice in Betway Premiership.

The Tanzanian national was a late substitute in Chiefs’1-1 draw away at Polokwane City on Saturday, playing only 23 minutes as the side dropped to fourth place on the log with 12 points, even though they are unbeaten in the campaign so far.

Speaking after the game, Da Cruz said Mtasingwa is still adapting to the country and the side’s game model, but he trusts his player. 

“It’s related to his adaptation in South Africa because he arrived a little bit late during our preseason,” said Da Cruz.

“So he needs time to adapt to our game model. I trust in him a lot. After the FIFA break, we will play a lot of games, so we will need everyone, and Adolf will get minutes,” he concluded.
