Ngezana: Decision made after setback

Romanian giants FCSB have made a decision on Siyabonga Ngezana following his recent setback after knee surgery.

Ngezana’s situation with the club has become complicated after his initial timeline for recovery following his surgery at the end of last season.

The South African missed the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a result and targeted rehabilitation throughout pre-season for a return to action in September.

According to reports from Romanian publication Digisport last week, FCSB were considering removing Ngezana from their 30-man squad list for the season, with Ngezana now slated to return at the end of the year.

“A decision will be made after the investigations that Siyabonga Ngezana will do this week,” FCSB director Mihai Stoica said.

“If he returns towards the end of November or even the beginning of December, it makes no sense for him to remain on the list, because between managing to integrate a player on difficult pitches, letting him play a match in December, on difficult pitches, after such a complicated injury and after a period in which he played for a long time with great problems, he should start the winter training with the team, the short one, of 10 days. I think that in the end Ngezana will be the one replaced,” he concluded.

Chiefs advised about Petersen

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabiso Malatsi has sent a warning to the club on how they should handle the situation of goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

Petersen made at least his fourth costly error of the season in a 1-1 draw against Polokwane City on Saturday, as Amakhosi had a 1-0 lead through a first-half goal by Lebohang Maboe. However, with 17 minutes to go, the former Bidvest Wits goalkeeper could not deal with a shot at the near post from Giovanni Philander, as he fumbled it, collided with the post, and the ball went through the net.

It was the third time in the league that Chiefs dropped points from the 31-year-old’s howler.

Amakhosi also crashed out of the MTN8 in the quarter-finals, after Khulekani Shezi caught the Cape Town-born shot-stopper off his line, in a cross-cum-shot, which went in at the near post and gave Golden Arrows a 1-0 win.

Opening up on the matter, Malatsi has warned Chiefs that they need to protect Petersen from a potential supporter-outrage in the stands.

“They have to put him on the bench and bring this boy from Sekhukhune (Renaldo Leaner). Petersen has to rest. They have to rest him; he has a lot of things in his head, I don’t know what’s happening,” Malatsi told KickOff.

“And the coach (Fernando Da Cruz) can see that he is flat, and obviously as a coach you protect your players. But he has to sit (on the bench) a little bit, so he can refocus. He has been making mistakes since the Sundowns game, Richards Bay, Polokwane City.

“They have to protect him, because you can see now that the supporters are angry,” Malatsi warned.
